One of the first projects I ever completed when I started my journey with graphic design, was a black and white interaction study. This project specifically required you to create two different sets of gradients. Two at 50% – 100% and two at 0% – 10%. We were to create these gradients by dropping an object covered in black paint from a consistent height until the you achieved you desired gradients. The objects I chose were a sock, and the bottom of a glass shot Bulleit bottle.
My introduction to typography was quite intimidating. We had to make our own typeface; starting with the letter “h” and following with “e, a, and o”. Due to the fact that these letters were all based on the “h”.
Just for fun I designed business cards and packages for a made up cosmetic company. This was my first attempt at packaging.
My first opportunity to have my art work published not only publicly, but nationally, was a contest of USAID. I selected to complete the static image submission. My idea was to appeal to children and the current generation of adults that grew up with comic books and cartoons. In this comic strip you can see the hero, cash, flying through various disaster scenes saving the day; implying that cash is the most helpful thing you can send to those struck by disasters.
I found a passion for poster design along my journey. There is something so pleasing about a strong black and white composition and the use of an open ground can be very useful and sophisticated. Whether I’m composing an illustrative, typographic or photo based poster I will find a way to have fun with it.
The title for the Threads of Change poster with the treads… was hand done by yours truly. In a contest of 72, this poster made it though multiple rounds of voting, making it as far as the final five.
For a more fundamental experience with packaging, I envisioned and created my own company and package design for a random product. I selected sunscreen for this project.
My favorite UI/UX project was to design a product based site. I chose to design my website around a hypothetical business that sells mass produced Devil Fruit; from the popular anime One Piece. This also felt like my opportunity to highlight my illustration skills, by drawing each devil fruit from scratch.
